This is the image for the news article titled Adult Students Obtain DiplomaFor two adults, the welding class offered by the Southern Hills Post-Secondary department meant more than just obtaining welding skills and certification. They were also able to earn their High School Diploma. Jason Andrews and Shane Shouse came to Southern Hills to obtain welding skills to get not just a job, but start a career. But, they were not expecting to be able to earn their diploma also.

Jason Andrews said that he made the decision to come back to school because he wanted to provide a good life for his family and send his kids to college. Jason said, “Receiving my diploma was something I never thought was possible at my age. Sure, I could get my GED, but, it’s not the same as a High School diploma.” Jason went on to say that he was very satisfied with the welding program at Southern Hills CTC. It’s very reasonably priced and the instructors really know what they are doing. Andrews state welding is… “Not just about laying a bead”.

When Shane Shouse decided to come back to school, he was homeless and jobless. He was looking for a way to make a better life for himself. He was tired of minimum wage jobs or no job at all. In Shane’s words, he was… “Super, super excited to receive his diploma. Happy not to feel like a dummy anymore.” When asked about the welding program, he said that he really likes the program. The instructors are on point. He thought he knew all about welding but he has learned so many new things in this class.

The welding program is just one of four programs at Southern Hills CTC that adults can take to earn not only an industry credential, but also, a high school diploma. The high school diploma is awarded from the State Board of Education, Ohio Department of Education – Adult Diploma Program.

The requirements to be eligible for the Adult Diploma Program are as follows:

1 Ohio Resident
2 22 years old or above
3 Do not have a diploma or GED
4 Obtain a combined score of 13 or more on the WorkKeys assessments (Reading for Information, Locating Information, Applied Mathematics)
5 Attend one of the four eligible programs (Welding, State Tested Nursing Assistant, Firefighter I, EMT Basic)
6 Obtain the industry credential associated with each program

When the above criteria are met, the Adult Diploma Program will pay for the training program taken to obtain the diploma.

Both Mr. Andrews and Mr. Shouse have obtained the American Welding Society (AWS) National certification in welding for mig welding. They have both chosen to continue the welding program to obtain two more credentials – AWS certification for tig welding and flux core welding.
